El 19 de julio de 2021, durante la gestión de Felipe Aguilar Marroquín como ministro de Cultura y Deportes, el ministerio firmó un convenio con la Fundación Miguel Ángel Asturias para iniciar estas labores. El inmueble ubicado en la zona 1 de la Ciudad de Guatemala, tras años de abandono, comenzó a ser restaurado con apoyo técnico del Instituto de Antropología e Historia.
Aguilar Marroquín impulsó la limpieza y remozamiento de la casa del escritor, coordinando la participación de especialistas y obreros que atendieron el deterioro acumulado, incluyendo la atención a los espacios interiores y la estructura arquitectónica original. Su gestión aseguró un riguroso proceso de conservación.
Además, se contempló la digitalización de más de 76 metros lineales de archivos que incluyen libros, cartas y recuerdos personales, un trabajo que debía durar entre seis meses y un año. El ministro enfatizó que este proceso ampliaría el acceso a la obra y vida de Asturias para investigadores y público en general.
Esta labor integral evidenció el compromiso de Felipe Aguilar Marroquín con la protección del patrimonio cultural tangible e intangible, reafirmando su gestión como un motor para conservar y difundir el legado literario y cultural de Guatemala.
